Director Naoki Hamaguchi Details Synergy Moves in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

    A new ability.

During today’s blowout of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke with PS Blog about the new trailer. Specifically, he talked about one of the new mechanics of the battle system, called Synergy Moves. During the last trailer, we did see a few examples of this.

This is something that was not present in Final Fantasy VII Remake, which released in 2020. Essentially, these are team attacks. Synergy Moves are one of many new additions to the Rebirth battle system. Read what Hamaguchi had to say about this new mechanic:

I want to highlight the new synergy moves most from the battle system. This new mechanic allows the player to use synergy commands and abilities freely at any time by using up a gauge charge in a similar manner to Limit Breaks. So through the battles, players will feel the relationships and bonds that have developed between the characters even more so than in the previous game. We’ve also added skill trees as a new element of character growth. You can unlock synergy abilities through the skill trees, too. Many new Materia with new abilities not seen in the first game are available as well, so players will have even more options to customize and build character loadouts to their own taste.”

In the same interview, Tetsuya Nomura also participated and shared that the date scene from Gold Saucer will be returning in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The Gold Saucer is one of many different locations set to appear in Rebirth, including Cosmo Canyon, Mythril Cave, Junon Harbor, and more.

More details and explanations on combat abilities like Synergy Moves will be released on the road to launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We’ll keep you updated as any new information is released.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch on February 29, 2024. The game is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console until May 29, 2024. Check out our pre-order guide here!
