Bandai Namco announced new mobile RPG Sword Art Online Variant Showdown will be going into extensive maintenance this September. Maintenance will last all the way into summer 2024, and Bandai Namco reveals the reasons why this maintenance is necessary for SAO Variant Showdown.
SAO Variant Showdown launched on November 22 last year, and several issues have persisted since then. Google Play Store and App Store users note many optimization and gameplay issues, and Bandai Namco appears to address these concerns with a major decision—the need for extensive maintenance.

Starting September 28, Sword Art Online Variant Showdown will be in maintenance until sometime in summer 2024. This maintenance will allow the development team to fix the game’s many issues and undergo a serious overhaul. Fortunately, user data will not be lost. Players will be unable to play the game until maintenance concludes, however.
Here’s a message from game producer Takeuchi via X (Twitter):
Thank you for playing SAOVS.
This is Takeuchi, the producer of SAOVS.
Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the various issues that have persisted since the app’s launch. Although we have tried to handle all issues as they arise, due to the frequency with which new issues are occurring, after careful consideration we have decided to temporarily suspend the service and carry out extensive maintenance to fix the underlying problems.
Doing so will require some time, but we hope that it will enable us to provide a more stable app experience for all our users. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We will be doing everything we can to ensure that we are able to provide the most enjoyable app experience possible for all our users once service resumes. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.
We hope you will continue to support Variant Showdown.
