In a new interview with Bonfire and Clouded Leopard Entertainment, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo wants to remake Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand. This is one of Kondo’s goals before he retires from Falcom.
Ys V is one of the few titles in the Ys series that has not officially localized or released in the west. As a result, its one of the most obscure entries in the long-running series. A chance may come for more players to finally play Ys V if Kondo’s goal comes to fruition.
The Goal of Ys V Remake
Remaking Ys V is one of Kondo’s goals before retiring, and the topic of working on a remake appears to be common at Falcom. However, most of Kondo’s colleagues say that it might be better to work on a new game. Ys V’s systems are very different compared to games in the modern era, so a remake would require significant changes and a higher budget compared to an all-new game. Kondo still hopes that this remake could be realized.
Here’s the translated excerpt via Hansuke21:
Q: Is there any chance of a remake of Ys V?
A: Actually, every time we discuss the development of a new game internally, someone will ask if we want to work on “Ys V”, but when I ask if we want to work on a new game or do a remake, most of my colleagues will say, “It’s better to work on a new game”. Ys V is a game I played at the time when I was a student at a university , and the script and its systems are very different and unique compared to games today. A remake would require significant changes, and the cost and labor would probably be more than just making it as a new game, which would still be challenging from the company’s perspective. Personally, I hope I can accomplish this goal before I retire…
Ys X: Nordics, the latest entry in the series, launches on September 28 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 with Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean language options. A worldwide release has not been announced yet.
