Sony Interactive Entertainment confirms PS5 sales have topped 41.7 million as of June 30, 2023. Total PS5 sales are expected to be well past 42 million in the second quarter of fiscal year 2023.
The company released its financials results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2023, which ran from April 1 to June 30. Although the latest financials report does not include the total number of active PlayStation Plus subscribers, several details about PS5 hardware sales were revealed.
PS5 Sales Update
Sony’s first quarter financial results reveal 41.7 million PS5 units were sold, and over 108 monthly active users are currently on PlayStation Network. As of June 30, the total PlayStation Network user count is up by five million from 103 million active users during the first quarter of fiscal year 2022.
56.5 million software units were sold during the first quarter of fiscal year 2023 across PS4 and PS5. This is a 9.3 million increase from the the 47.2 million software sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. According to Sony, 6.6 million units were first-party titles, which is the same amount sold during the first quarter of fiscal year 2022. 72% of software sales were full game software digital downloads, which is down 7% from the first quarter of fiscal year 2022.
Recently, Microsoft and Activision signed a “binding agreement” to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms. Call of Duty is among one of the most successful third-party titles on PS4 and PS5, so this will surely continue to have a positive effect on hardware and software sales for the foreseeable future.
One of Sony’s major releases for the current fiscal year is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Hardware and accessory sales are expected to increase with the release of the new title. In fact, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will receive its own DualSense Controller, Limited Edition Bundle, and PS5 console covers, which are sold separately.
Lastly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases on October 30 for PS5.
