Multiple sources claim the next Nintendo console is planned to launch in the second half of 2024. The new console will be the successor to the Nintendo Switch, and it’s expected to maintain key functionality from the highly successful portable hybrid console.
As of March 31, over 125 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most successful consoles of all time. Over one billion software units have been sold on Nintendo Switch as well, and Nintendo appears to be preparing for its next generation system to follow similar success.
Next Nintendo Console Seemingly Set for 2024
The next Nintendo console is being prepared for launch in the second half of 2024 according to sources close to VGC and Eurogamer. Development kits are reportedly already in the hands of several partner studios. Additionally, VGC and Eurogamer report that the new console will be portable just like the Nintendo Switch. The new console will use physical cartridges once more, but exact details regarding backwards compatibility were not reported.
Sources close to the outlets claim the new Nintendo console will launch with a LCD screen instead of a OLED screen to reduce costs. The use of LCD screens would allow for larger storage capacity at launch for “higher fidelity games.” Nintendo wants to ensure the console will have enough stock to avoid manufacturing shortages that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S faced.
Previously, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the next Nintendo console would use the same Nintendo Account system from Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch has entered its seventh year in the video game market, and over 290 million Nintendo Accounts have been created across mobile and console. Furukawa believes that keeping the same Nintendo Accounts system from Switch will allow players to smoothly transition to the next console whenever it arrives.
