A gameplay trailer for Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons has been released. The trailer overviews how the gameplay will function compared to other beat-em-ups.
It’s been six years since the last Double Dragon was released, with Double Dragon IV being released for PS4, PC, and Switch. Double Dragon Gaiden will be the first time the mainline franchise will release for PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S. The new trailer captures the typical exciting combat with rogue-lite elements, thirteen playable characters, and tag-team action. Double Dragon Gaiden will release in late July.
A New Age of Double Dragon
The latest trailer for Double Dragon Gaiden provides the best look yet at how its gameplay loop will function compared to other games in the franchise. As the trailer says, “Fighting isn’t just about button mashing.” Players will have access to an SP meter to perform various actions. For one, they can use it to tag in another character to allow for a different style of gameplay and combat.
However, the meter can also be used to perform a special move. Using a special move to deal with one enemy at a time or a wide variety of opponents grants the player far more combat potential and in-game currency. Players must employ strategy and character upgrades to face the many enemies the game will offer.
Double Dragon: Gaiden uses rogue-lite elements to create an almost arcade-like atmosphere. At the end of every play session, players can cash out their currency in exchange for tokens on the menu. Tokens can unlock tips, artwork, music, and more playable characters. When players return to the level grind, they can raise the difficulty to get more tokens per level. This risk and reward system is one feature that separates Double Dragon: Gaiden from other beat-em-ups.
