Final Fantasy XVI: How to Equip Gear

Managing your equipment is key to survival.

Use our Final Fantasy XVI Equip Gear Guide to properly outfit Clive for any given situation. Carefully choose and consider what you need. Do you need some extra strength? Maybe a ‘Timely’ accessory will be of great assistance? Managing your equipment is key to survival.

There are several types of gear that you can equip Clive with to augment his stats. Also, you get to see what weapons you equip! Sadly Clive only wears story appropriate gear. No deep outfit customization here.

How to Locate the Gear Menu

Managing menus has always been a Final Fantasy staple. Despite being an action game, Final Fantasy XVI is still stuffed with RPG elements. Properly checking out new gear and abilities is integral in maximizing your combat prowess, so knowing which menus do what will only benefit you.

First thing first, open your main menu by pressing the OPTIONS button. The default main menu tab is ‘Attributes’. Just a measly tap of the L2 button will get you over to your ‘Gear & Eikons’ tab. This tab is pretty bare early game, but as you acquire more Eikons this menu will fill up.

    What Gear Can Clive Equip?

Clive has 4 categories of gear that he can equip:

    • Weapons – Equipping superior weapons will yield in higher Attack and Stagger damage
    • Belts – Equipping Belts will increase Defense and HP values, and sometimes other stats
    • Vambraces – Equipping Belts will increase Defense and HP values, and sometimes other stats

and last but certainly not least…

    Accessories

Accessories. Clive can equip up to three of these at once. These handy pieces of gear will further augment Clives stats. What they do obviously depends on the type of accessory. There are unique Accessories as well that impart special effects.

Timely Accessories are accessories that the player can equip Clive with to make interfacing with certain aspects of the gameplay easier. Here is a comprehensible list of these accessories and what they do.

    Accessory Description
Ring of Timely Strikes When equipped, complex ability combinations can be executed by simply pressing ‘Square’.
Ring of Timely Evasion When equipped, Clive will automatically evade attacks, as long as the attack can be evaded.
Ring of Timely Focus When equipped, time slows before an evadable enemy attack strikes Clive. No effect when equipped with the ring of timely evasion.
Ring of Timely Healing When equipped, Clive will automatically use a potion when his HP falls below a certain point. Potions will be used before high potions.
Ring of Timely Assistance When equipped, pet commands are executed automatically and Torgal’s actions will adapt to Clive’s. The Ring of Timely Assistance’s effects are included in the Ring of Timely Strikes.

I did take the opportunity to test these out. They do NOT make you invincible in any way. If you are mid-attack, even the Ring of Timely Focus will not be able to get Clive out of the way of harm. The Ring of Timely Strikes also makes the game auto-combo similar to some fighting games. The Timely Healing and Assistance Rings do help the player focus on the combat and not have to worry about item management or commanding Torgal. These have appeal even to players who don’t use the combat aiding accessories.
