    Final Fantasy XVI is the next entry in the lauded RPG series. Final Fantasy as a franchise has always had some of the biggest talents available on the development team. Localization Director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox is a welcome addition and is an integral part of the style of Final Fantasy‘s newest entry.

    Who is Michael-Christopher Koji-Fox?

    Michael-Christopher Koji Fox grew up in Portland, Oregon. Koji has enjoyed video games most of his life. The first game he imported to play in Japanese was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He worked very hard to learn Japanese and even became an English teacher in Japan. He was very intrigued by Final Fanasy XI and loved that it was more high fantasy compared to Final Fantasy X. He got into the Beta Test for the game and eventually wound up on the localization team.

    Michael-Christopher Koji Fox is one of the more prolific Translators at Square Enix. Koji Fox mostly specializes in translating the more traditional fantasy-leaning entries in the Final Fantasy series. He has had huge roles outside of Translation, though, as he has also been a drummer in a Final Fantasy XI staff band called The Star Onions and the vocalist for a Final Fantasy XIV staff band called The Primals. 

    What’s His Role in FFXVI?

    Translation is of course one of Koji Fox’s main roles. He is the Localization Director after all. A role such as this does require good problem-solving skills and imagination. Skills he has honed while helping formulate and write the lore for Final Fantasy XIV. Koji Fox has been tasked to take this even further for Final Fantasy XVI.

    He has closely conferred with the Creative Director and writer of the Original Screenplay of Final Fantasy XVI, Kazutoyo Maehiro. Koji’s task from this close teamwork was to translate the original script to English, touch it with some Western Fantasy flair, and then translate it back to Japanese. This was done to give Final Fantasy XVI a truly Western feel to match the desired tone.

    What Has He Worked on Previously?

    Koji Fox has been a highly prolific Translator for Square Enix. His debut project was Final Fantasy XI, which was his first translation job for the Final Fantasy series.

    He was also a Translator on Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII and the PSP remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. However, he has mostly been the Translation Director and part of the Lore Writing for Final Fantasy XIV.

    Koji Fox has worked on games outside of the Final Fantasy series! He has been in various Translation and Localization roles for other games including The World Ends With You, Nier: Automata, and Adventures of Mana. He even provided the Black Mage voice in Mario Hoops 3 on 3.
