    Kazutoyo Maehiro has been working at Square since the 1990’s and has had many important positions on many teams for many games. A lot of Meahiro’s strengths involve Planning and Writing, so that means many of his roles on games involved doing these!

    What’s His Role in FFXVI?

    Maehiro is the writer of the Original Screenplay for Final Fantasy XVI. He is also the Creative Director. This means that he worked on the original version of the story and makes creative contributions to help the rest of the project have a cohesive vision that matches the tone and ideas he instated.

    However, Final Fantasy XVI is unique in terms of story for the franchise. The Original Screenplay was translated and rewritten in English with the assistance of Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. This sounds normal, right? No, the purpose of this wasn’t for Localization but to actually retool the entire original story to match Western sensibilities.

    What Has He Worked on Previously?

    Final Fantasy XII

    A lot of Maehiro’s contributions have been to the Final Fantasy series. Specifically, early on, these contributions were to Matsuno’s games. He was an event planner on Final Fantasy Tactics. He designed and directed maps for Vagrant Story. Maehiro even helped design the Battle System for Final Fantasy XII.

    Maehiro worked as a Main Scenario writer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Real Reborn and Heaveansward. These were his last contributions before he began work on Final Fanasy XVI.
