Final Fantasy XVI has plenty of items for you to utilize and discover throughout your adventure. Item usage is an important aspect of any RPG. It is imperative that you properly utilize items throughout XVI to make the most out of them.

Item Menu
There are two item menus you need to pay attention to: the gameplay Item Menu on the bottom left side of the screen and the Item tab in your main menu. One is for using your items in the heat of battle, while the other is for managing what you bring into said heat of battle.
Obtaining Items
You obtain items through various means. You can find them littered throughout Valishthea on the ground or in treasure chests. Be sure to explore any new area thoroughly!
You can also obtain items by killing your foes, with them dropping anything from materials, equipment, or consumables. Exploring often and completing quests will help you with this. Even if you don’t get consumable items, the gil and materials alone will aid you plenty!
Of course, there are also item shops where you can spend your hard-earned Gil on a selection of goods. Your main hub of commerce will be at the Hideaway.
Equipping Items
This is why you need to remember to check the Items tab in the main menu. This is how you choose what items to carry into battle. Clive can carry a selection of restoratives and status buffing items, so be sure to pick and choose properly for the situation at hand. Using items to boost your attack or defense could prove invaluable during a tough battle. There’s even an item that restores your limit break gauge. Working that into your strategy may prove fruitful! Items will surely add more depth to battles and allow you to develop even more helpful plans.
You can also use items directly from this menu. Just hold Square, and Clive will administer whatever item you need to. I recommend doing this if Clive is low on HP outside of battle. Don’t wanna roll into the next fight, mostly dead, now do we?
Using Items in Battle
This is why you need to be mindful of what items you equip. You can only bring 3 items into a fight, and they have limited quantities on top of that. The bottom left part of your screen will show your item satchel and show you which item corresponds to specific d-pad buttons. The left d-pad button will either be empty or swapped to Torgal’s commands. So pay attention, and don’t have the wrong menu open!
An important thing to keep in mind is your limited amount of battle items. With good exploration, you can refill your stock even when adventuring. This will come in handy if you happen to take a beating often. Some simple exploration or killing weaker enemies could save Clive’s life in more dangerous scraps.
