Final Fantasy XVI: Active Time Lore and How to Use It

All the lore you'd ever need!

Final Fantasy XVI is shaping into a huge and intriguing story with buckets of lore and characters to remember. It’ll be hard to keep track of if you happen to have distractions while playing or a busy life outside of the game. Active Time Lore is a handy feature to help players keep up to date on Final Fantasy XVI. Use our Final Fantasy XVI Active Time Lore guide to learn all about this awesome feature.

What is ATL (Active Time Lore)?

Active Time Lore is a feature in Final Fantasy XVI that allows a player to access an up-to-date compendium of information during story scenes. It’s handy and easy to access during story scenes.

    How to Use ATL

During a cutscene, you can either hold the touchpad or pause the game and tap the touchpad to open up the ATL menu. Sadly, ATL can ONLY be opened during story cutscenes. You can’t access this information during tertiary scenes or during normal gameplay.

The ATL menu will have several selectable “bubbles” that will contain a character, location, or term. Use the L Stick to navigate to your desired “bubble” and select it with the ‘X’ Button to open a text box with a blurb of current, up-to-date information.

How to View Information Outside of ATL

There are dedicated NPCs that you can speak to at the Hideaway that have all of the information contained in the Active Time Lore and more! Speak to Harpocretes and Vivian to get swathes of information all compiled together. Visit them often to update the records of the realm!

Harpocretes contains your information in the Thousand Tomes. The purpose of this is to recount terms, events, and beasts you have paid witness to.

Vivian can keep Clive updated on the State of the Realm. She can tell you all about the political turmoil and personal relationships between nations and characters in about any given year.

    ATL Inspirations?

Active Time Lore (ATL) definitely gets its name from the classic Final Fantasy series Active Time Battle (ATB) battle system. That’s a battle system, though. Keeping the name is cute, but there has to be something closer, right? Final Fantasy IX had the Active Time Event (ATE) system, which allowed players to cut away from the main character and view extra scenes. Hmm, not quite there. Well, the only Final Fantasy to have something similar to this is the Datalog feature in Final Fantasy XIII. The Datalogs were amazing. They were brimming with story recaps, character info, and lore info. Final Fantasy XVI’s ATL, however, isn’t solely regulated to the main menu like Final Fantasy XIII. You can crack the ATL menu open any time during a cutscene. This is the evolution Final Fantasy is all about!
