A new developer diary for Assassin’s Creed Mirage has revealed that the game will return to the series’ roots. Mirage was first announced last year as a return to form for the franchise, which would serve as a stark contrast to the more modern franchise entries like Valhalla, Origins, and Odyssey. The new behind-the-scenes footage from Ubisoft elaborates on how the development team intends to bring back the feel of the original games.
A Tribute To the Original
The development team explained how they took a close look at the original Assassin’s Creed and asked themselves, “What exactly defines the assassin experience to us?” They used that question as an anchoring point to reinterpret mechanics from the original game with modern hardware. For one, there is the parkour and traversal mechanics the franchise is known for. Assassin’s Creed Mirage takes place in Baghdad, and the developers made sure that it functioned as an urban playground of sorts. Parkour in this game is contingent on flow, momentum, and ease of use.
They also talk about how stealth will work in the upcoming release. The whole system is enhanced with new animations and references to old games. These include the bench and rooftop garden assassinations from Assassin’s Creed 2. Enemy AI has been polished and given more power in order to incentivize a more stealthy approach for players. The development team has tried to encourage combat as a last resort only.
Finally, the dev team talks about how assassinations will work in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Essentially each target requires preparation and research before the player can go about eliminating them. And with “Black Box Missions”, the player is given the freedom to approach “key assassination missions however [they] see fit.”
