After years of waiting, gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 has finally been shown off. The trailer confirmed returning characters like Kenshi, Raiden, Kung Lao, Mileena, and Kitana, as well as staples like Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Liu Kang.
A New World
Mortal Kombat 1 is confirmed to be following the story that MK11 already set up. Every character has a brand new coat of paint and story to match this new world. Ed Boon officially confirmed that series rivals, Scorpion and Sub Zero, are now brothers. The trailer teased Kitana and Mileena’s sisterly bond and how they aren’t enemies any longer. The trailer also confirms a younger Raiden and a Kenshi pre-blindness as the main players in the story.
Kameo Fighters
Kameo fighters will be a new mechanic introduced in Mortal Kombat 1. The gameplay trailer teased them, with characters like Kano, Sonya, and Jax making appearances. Ed Boon and an NRS blog post fully detailed the mechanic. They essentially function as assists, similar to how the Marvel vs Capcom series functions.
The mechanic allows for greater setups for combos in the gameplay. The post talks about how one can “use Kameo Sonya Blade and gain access to ground kombos with leg grab, or extend air kombos with square wave.” Boon also confirmed that characters could be both kameo fighters and regular fighters, and the trailer gave a glimpse of Kameo fighters Stryker and Goro. It will be a brand new factor in the complicated meta, allowing for greater player customization.
