Sony Shares First Official Trailer for The Gran Turismo Movie

Director Neill Blomkamp reveals inspiration behind the film.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sony Pictures shared the first official trailer for the upcoming Gran Turismo movie. The film debuts in August 2023 exclusively through theaters in premium formats and IMAX.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp and based on a true story, the Gran Turismo movie tells the story of a young teenage gamer whose skills in Gran Turismo helped him become a professional racecar driver. Moreover, screenplay for the new film was handled by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and multiple executive producers served for the film’s production. These executive producers include Jason Hall, Matthew Hirsch, Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi, and head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst. The movie’s cast includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Archie Madekwe.

Alongside the new Gran Turismo trailer, PlayStation Blog published an interview with director Neill Blomkamp about the film. The director was given a script about the movie and wondered how a racing simulator could be adapted into film. Blomkamp’s love for Nissan R35 GTRs quickly gave him the inspiration needed for the Gran Turismo movie. Additionally, Blomkamp was amazed by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the professional racer that learned his skills by playing Gran Turismo.
