Atari announced the acquisition of over 100 PC and console titles from the 80s and 90s including Accolade, Infogrames, and Microprose games. Notable intellectual properties from this massive catalog include the infamous Bubsy and Demolition Racer franchises.
Atari Acquires Bubsy, Demolition Racer, and More
According to Atari, the company’s acquisition includes Bubsy, Hardball, and Demolition Racer franchises alongside the 1942: Pacific Air War, F-117A, and F-14 air combat series. Further, Atari confirms it has acquired the trademark to the Accolade and GTI brands, which were once prominent in the 80s to late 90s. Further titles and brands involved with the acquisition were not disclosed. However, Atari shared its goal for this acquisition and the company moving forward.
Atari is apparently seeking to expand its digital and physical distribution of classic games, create new games based on classic IPs, and explore new merchandising opportunities. The company’s recent efforts are part of a multi-year plan to transform the company as “one of the world’s most iconic brands” in gaming. This plan includes expansions to Atari’s gaming operations by utilizing an extensive vault of IPs.
“This is a deep catalog that includes groundbreaking and award-winning titles from Accolade, Infogrames and Microprose,” said Atari CEO Wade Rosen in a press release. “Many of these titles are a part of Atari history, and fans can look forward to seeing many of these games re-released in physical and digital formats, and in some cases, even ported to modern consoles.”
The gaming IP acquisition by Atari comes just one month after the company announced its acquisition of Nightdive Studios. Currently, Nightdive Studios is developing System Shock remake, which releases on May 30 for PC via Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store. PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S versions release at a later date. Lastly, Atari’s acquisition of Nightdive Studios is expected to close in April 2023.
