NEO: The World Ends With You “underperformed,” didn’t meet initial expectations according to Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda

Square Enix published their first half results briefing for fiscal year ending on March 31st 2022. The briefing covers data from April 1st 2021 to September 30th 2021 and Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda shared an interesting remark for NEO: The World Ends With You. According to Matsuda, the game did not meet Square Enix’s expectations. Here’s the brief excerpt, courtesy of RPGSite:

While “NEO: The World Ends with You” was well received by users, it has underperformed our initial expectations.

Within the same fiscal period, overall sales were lower than the first half of 2020. During fiscal year ending on March 2021, games such as Final Fantasy VII: Remake bolstered the company’s sales. For now, Square Enix hopes that games like NEO: The World Ends With You continues to sell over the long term. It would certainly help if the game was marketed better and released on Steam where more JRPG fans play games than the Epic Games Store. Lastly, check out our review here.
