CEO Shuntaro Furukawa says Nintendo will focus on more original IPs in the future while maintaining long-sellers like Mario and Zelda

The Switch is doing really well for Nintendo and crushing sales records. Nintendo plans to bring more games to the platform soon and in the coming years, we could see some new series going forward. According to Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa, the company plans to invest in more original games and IPs in the future. He also touched up on Nintendo’s research into new hardware. Here’s what he had to say via Nikkei:

“I myself am looking at and studying various forms of entertainment. In the future, we will focus on creating new game series as well as long-sellers such as Mario and Zelda.

We are constantly building up ideas for the new consoles the market is expecting, but there are some things we can’t do now due to technology and cost constraints.

The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how we can propose new forms of entertainment. In order to create a single piece of hardware, we have to do a lot of preparation several years in advance, so we are working without stopping. In the end, the deciding factor in whether or not to commercialize a product is whether it can create a new experience.”

It will be interesting to see even more new Nintendo IPs stand alongside Splatoon and Astral Chain. In the meantime, stay tuned at Final Weapon for the latest Japanese gaming news and support us on Patreon!
