Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil movie. The film will premiere in theaters, both standard and IMAX, on September 18.
Zach Cregger directs the new movie iteration of the beloved horror franchise. The director has previously worked on the critically acclaimed Barbarian and the award-winning Weapons. Austin Abrams (Weapons) will play the protagonist, named Bryan. The film will also star Zach Cherry, Paul Walter Hauser, and Kali Reis. The new Resident Evil movie will not feature any characters from the video game series, such as Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, or Claire Redfield. Instead, it will depict an entirely original story, set during the fall of Raccoon City.
The trailer’s description provides a synopsis of the film: “From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.”
