Starsand Island will invite players to experience a new cozy life-sim sandbox game on February 12, and before the early access launch on PC, Final Weapon had the opportunity to interview Starsand Island creative director Richardo Wang and technical director Golton Gao to learn more about what’s to come.
Our interview with creative director Richardo Wang and technical director Golton Gao delves into the updated release schedule for Starsand Island, the Nintendo Switch 2 version and its supported features, post-launch content, and more.
The full Starsand Island interview can be read below:
What can players expect with the core gameplay loop and systems of Starsand Island?
Richardo: At its heart, Starsand Island is a next-generation cozy life-simulation sandbox built around the idea of creating and enjoying an ideal pastoral life. Players can farm, fish, raise animals, explore the island, and freely shape their environment through a highly granular DIY construction system that blends grid-based placement with modular block building.
Equally important is the living community. The island is populated by NPCs with vivid behavioral logic, personal routines, memories, and emotional growth arcs. Relationships are not treated as checklists, but as evolving connections that unlock new interactions, shared activities, and personal stories over time. Rather than following a single main storyline, players piece together their own life story through these systems and everyday moments on the island.
Starsand Island is launching in Steam Early Access and Xbox Partner Preview on February 12, followed by the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions at a later date. What led to the change in the release schedule and strategy?
Golton: We decided to launch Starsand Island first in Steam Early Access, followed by the Xbox Partner Preview because this approach allows us to gather player feedback early and further polish the game. A phased release enables us to fully optimize the core gameplay before launching on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, delivering a more refined version. Additionally, since each platform has different certification and technical requirements, staggering the release dates helps ensure a high-quality gaming experience across all platforms.
Could you give an update about the specifications and features of the Switch 2 version? Has anything in the game changed in the time following the Switch 2 version’s announcement?
Richardo: The Switch 2 version will fully utilize the new hardware, supporting DLSS. It will also feature GameChat and mouse support, and allow up to 4 players to play together online. Friends can build, explore, and interact anytime, anywhere. Whether cooperating on farming tasks or participating in island activities together, the multiplayer mode offers a more diverse and engaging gameplay experience.
What content will be available in the Early Access version? What can players expect in terms of post-launch updates?
Golton: The Early Access version introduces players to the core Starsand Island experience, including farming and animal husbandry, exploration, construction, relationship building with NPCs, and a wide range of everyday island activities. From the very beginning, the world is designed to feel alive, detailed, and emotionally engaging.
Post-launch, we have plans for ongoing support and content expansion. This includes continued system refinement, new features, and map expansion. We’ve previously shared that additional offshore islands are planned to be added after release as new DLC, giving players even more spaces to explore and shape.
Starsand Island is set to collaborate with My Time at Portia, a fan-favorite in the life-sim genre. Could you share more details about what this collaboration will entail?
Richardo: The collaboration between Starsand Island and My Time at Portia will bring exclusive themed content to players. In Starsand Island, players can meet classic characters from My Time at Portia, interact with them, and develop friendships. The collaboration will also introduce special furniture inspired by My Time at Portia and limited-time quests, offering life simulation fans a brand new crossover experience.
There’s an abundance of titles in the life-sim genre, such as Story of Seasons and Rune Factory. Has the Starsand Island team considered more collaborations for the future?
Golton: We’re very grateful that players are already thinking ahead and imagining future possibilities. At the moment, we don’t have anything additional to announce regarding collaborations beyond what has already been shared.
Our current focus is on building Starsand Island into the warm, healing, and richly detailed experience we’ve envisioned, and we’ll continue to listen closely to our community as the game grows.
Did you draw inspiration from other games while developing Starsand Island?
Golton: Oh, yes! Our team consists of longtime fans of life-simulation and farming games, including titles like Stardew Valley, My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock, and The Sims. These games inspired us in different ways, particularly in how they create emotionally resonant worlds and meaningful daily routines.
At the same time, Starsand Island is deeply shaped by our own philosophy. We wanted to create a spiritual utopia, a place where players can step away from pressure, slow down, and experience an idyllic island life influenced by an Eastern pastoral sensibility. That balance of familiar genre foundations and our own creative values is central to the game’s identity.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Golton: We hope Starsand Island can become a warm place for players to rest, recharge, and rediscover the beauty of everyday life. Life can be demanding, and our wish is that the island feels like a gentle companion through those moments, reminding players that happiness can be found in simple things, meaningful connections, and living at one’s own pace.
We’re sincerely thankful for all the support and curiosity so far, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the island.
Thank you so much for your time!
