Niantic and The Pokémon Company announced the Pokémon GO progression and XP leveling system will be rebalanced on October 15 with a new update. In addition, the level cap will be increased from 50 to 80 that same day in what will be the largest maximum level increase to date for Pokémon GO.
The new Pokémon GO XP update will let players level up more frequently and receive improved rewards on the journey to level 80. There will be increased Pokémon Storage, Item Bag Storage, and Gift Storage rewards as well, and new avatar items will be available starting at Level 25. What’s more, Level-Up Research for levels 41 to 50 will be removed, and new Level-Up Research tasks will be added to levels 71 to 80. Since the XP update is quite substantial, players may reach new levels automatically once the update takes effect without reverting to a previous level. Further, players Level 70 and above have increased chances at becoming Lucky Friends with other players.
In preparation for the update, the new XP Celebration event will be held through October 14 at 11:59 p.m. local time. During the event, players will earn double catch XP for “Nice,” “Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws. Players will also earn an addition 3,000 XP from successful Raids and Max Battles, which stacks with other event bonuses. What’s more, all players Level 5 and above will receive Timed Research with a chance to earn more than 7 million XP. More details can be found at the official Pokémon GO blog.
Lastly, Pokémon GO is available now for Android and iOS.
