Isekai anime can be quite charming, humorous, and unpredictable, and I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability certainly falls into all three descriptions. After catching up with the first season, I definitely expected even more wild and funny moments in 7th Prince Season 2, and fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed at all with episode 1.

Spoiler warning: this review will discuss slight spoilers from the ending of 7th Prince Season 1 and some of the events for Season 2 episode 1 (episode 13 overall).

After claiming victory against Guisarme in the Lordost region, Lloyd sets his next target in the endless pursuit of magical knowledge: Holy Magic. Considering Lloyd is blessed with incredible magical aptitude, there’s no magic spell that will turn him away. However, in order to learn this sacred magic, Lloyd turns his attention to the church, which could mean he’s biting more than he can chew.

7th Prince Season 2 Episode 1 is a Really Good Introductory Episode

The first episode of 7th Prince Season 2 opens up with a magical brawl between Lloyd and a mysterious angel, so the intrigue within the first minute or so is already quite high. There’s not much to be gleaned from this scene yet, however, as the next scene focuses on Ren greeting Lloyd, Grim, and Shiro in order to help the young prince prepare for his day. From this point, the first episode essentially helps you get reacquainted with many of the characters from the first season, along with touching up on lore to serve as the general basis of what’s to come later on.

Following the events of the first season, reconstruction is well underway on Lordost Island, with Galilea leading some of the efforts there. In typical Lloyd fashion, he’s mostly having fun here and reconnects with some of his friends, and 7th Prince’s signature comedy elements really come into play. Although Lloyd is the prince of Saloum Kingdom, he’s more lackadaisical about his own title, and the people around him subconsciously treat him as a normal person. However, the episode does begin to foreshadow Lloyd’s history with the church and his curiosity for Holy Magic is piqued.

With Babylon and Ren at his side, Lloyd begins his plan of gaining the church’s favor over time in order to learn divine sorcery. One of the obstacles in doing so is the church’s father, who is already quite mad at Lloyd for summoning a magical menace in the church before. I can’t blame him, but when Escher walks in as the church’s beautiful and sisterly nun, I suddenly feel like it will all turn out okay.

This Church Saga is Going to Be Hectic

I do want to note that the animation and music of 7th Prince Season 2 is good. It’s not remarkable or bad, but it’s just right and what I expect from isekai anime these days. The animation certainly adapts Escher in the best way possible, and Lloyd’s facial expressions throughout the episode are quite funny and on point. The episode also delves into Escher and Lloyd’s backstory together, explaining the incident that got the church father winded up earlier on in the episode.

This episode really becomes chaotic and suggestive when Saria, Lloyd’s sister, returns to perform with Escher for a recital. Before that performance, she runs into some thugs and perpetuates the trouble that she’s found herself in, due to her own nonchalant personality. Despite being siblings, I found it hilarious that Lloyd didn’t intervene until Escher was quite literally groped by one of the thugs, as he could have quickly settled the matter with his insane teleportation magic right at the start. Ren’s own magic really didn’t do much either, but it was good seeing her actually make progress on that front.

Near the end of the episode, Lloyd begins to explain how Saria and Escher’s recital could offer a means of learning divine sorcery, as the recital itself could invoke a magical ritual. Coincidentally, Lloyd and Babylon notice that someone, or something, is watching the church from above. When Saria and Escher’s healing recital begins, Lloyd’s incredible curiousness for magic reaches its peak, and while investigating, he’s teleported to some distant location high in the skies. This brings the episode back full circle, as Lloyd discovers the angel that he was fighting in the flash-forward scene from the very start.

Episode 1 Proves Learning Holy Magic is Easier Said Than Done

If the teaser at the end of the episode certainly shows that there’s going to be a tough battle ahead of Lloyd, and I’m intrigued to see how it plays out. Specifically, I’m curious about what Lloyd could achieve with Holy Magic in his arsenal. Thus far, I think 7th Prince Season 2 is off to a solid start already, and you’ll definitely enjoy the series if you’re newer to the isekai genre and want to see what it’s all about.

I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability Season 2 is now streaming weekly on Crunchyroll.
