During Anime Expo 2025, Yusuke Matsui and Studio Khara producer Kohei Fujiwara announced that the Sugar Sugar Rune anime will receive a brand-new adaptation. Moreover, a short film was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Moyoco Anno’s Sugar Sugar Rune manga. The short film, titled Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcières, is a prequel to the original story.

Moyoco Anno released the Sugar Sugar Rune manga in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 2004 to 2007. The manga performed well, receiving the 29th Kodansha Manga Award in the children’s manga category. Studio Pierrot later adapted it into an anime, which ran for 51 episodes from July 2, 2005, to June 24, 2006.
