GKIDS has acquired the rights to Shin Godzilla and announced a remastered version of the film, Shin Godzilla 4K Remaster, will return to theaters on August 14. The re-release will be exclusive to North America.
Shin Godzilla initially released in 2016. While Godzilla Minus One features a rageful version of the character with a far-more personal, human-filled story, Shin Godzilla is a borderline horror film. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, known for Evangelion and the other Shin movies, direct the film.

The official website describes Shin Godzilla as follows:
Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. As the Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm, a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then it evolves. The government assembles a motley task force to combat the monster when an envoy from the US Department of State delivers a folder of classified documents. On its cover is written: “GODZILLA.”
From visionary directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla offers a thrilling origin story to one of cinema’s greatest creations. Propelled by astounding visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, Shin Godzilla is equal parts pulse-pounding action film and venomous political satire, worthy of the franchise’s towering history.
Recently, according to an article from Bloomberg Japan, the next film from director Takashi Yamazaki will be a direct sequel to the most recent Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus One. Yamazaki directed the original film, which released in 2023. While TOHO has not confirmed any official details about the follow-up’s story, in a previous interview, Yamazaki stated that he wanted a sequel to have “a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama.”
