Following the launch of Shogakukan’s NOVELOUS app in North America, Final Weapon had the opportunity to interview Yume Mizusawa, the author of the Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! light novel series.
In our exclusive interview, Mizusawa discussed the inspiration behind Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!, his reaction to his works being translated into English on NOVELOUS, his approach to writing the decade-long series, and so much more.

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us about your background for our readers?
Yume Mizusawa: Dear readers, hello! I am Yume Mizusawa, the author of “Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!” Thank you so much for enjoying my work!
I was born and still live in Aomori Prefecture, a rural area in Japan known for its peaceful countryside. From there, I occasionally travel to Tokyo for meetings as a writer and to participate in various events.
When I was a child, I enjoyed creating enemy characters for games and even entered contests for that game series. (I only won participation prizes, though…) During my school days, I was always in sports clubs and had little connection to the humanities, but I still loved anime and games.
I made my debut as a writer in 2012 after becoming a working adult, and I submitted my work to a newcomer award in 2011. That was the year a major earthquake struck the eastern part of Japan, including the region where I live. Inspired by that event, I decided that since you never know what life will bring, I should do what I want to do while I can.
There were also other reasons, such as the judges being fans of my favorite manga artists, and I decided to submit my work that year, and fortunately, I was awarded the prize.
Since then, I have continued my career as a writer, striving to create enjoyable works for the world.
Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!’s original run spans 10 years with 22 volumes released to date. What was your initial approach to writing the series, and how did it change over time?
Mizusawa: I have never been particularly skilled at writing. However, drawing is even more challenging for me, so the only way I could create a work on my own was through novels. As a result, my skills were quite raw when I first became a writer.
Therefore, from the very first volume, I have consistently strived to make my writing as clear and accessible as possible with each subsequent volume. Improving my writing skills has been my primary focus, and I believe that, in a positive sense, the stories themselves have remained consistent and unwavering.
On the other hand, the first volume of “Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!”, which was the first thing I wrote, is undoubtedly the most immature work I’ve produced. However, it was also the most enjoyable and passionate book I’ve ever written. I can confidently say it’s interesting. I think the power came from my desire to turn something I truly loved into a work of art.
Even after many years, as my skills have improved, I always strive to never forget the feelings and passion I had at that time when writing novels.
Writing it like this makes it sound simple, but I’ve been writing for over ten years…It’s really been a long time. Recently, a child who read “Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!” when they were in elementary school told me they had become a working adult. Ten years is that kind of length…!
Did you face any challenges while writing the story of Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!?
Mizusawa: I have always worked hard to meet deadlines! No matter what was going on around me, even if I was physically exhausted, I was determined to finish the book! That passion has carried me through.
The region where I live, Aomori Prefecture, receives a lot of snow, so during the winter season, there were times when I had to shovel snow while discussing the manuscript over the phone with my editor.
Additionally, as a writer, my income remains unstable, and I would like to find a way to improve this situation. Balancing my livelihood with my writing has been challenging, and it continues to be so.
I believe this has been the case for many people working in the arts throughout history, so perhaps it is the fate of writers.
What was your inspiration for the series and Soji’s love for twin-tail hair?
Mizusawa: When writing this series, I considered various ideas, but ultimately decided to combine two of my favorite things—twin-tail and tokusatsu heroes—into a single novel. Given that twin-tail are the theme, the number two has a wide-ranging influence on the series, from its structure and setting to the names of the characters.
For some reason, their bodies undergo sudden mutations, they don armor made of steel, or they gain superhuman abilities—in other words, they transform into something completely different from who they were before. This is the beginning of countless hero stories found around the world.
In this series, I wanted to start with a boy who loves twin-tail as a hair style become a powerful hero by transforming himself with twin-tail.
So, while the idea is unusual, I actually think the structure of the story is quite simple.
Before the NOVELOUS app launched, fans in the west had the opportunity to experience the story of Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! through the anime adaptation. What are your thoughts on the original light novel series being translated into English for the first time on NOVELOUS?
Mizusawa: I was thrilled to learn that this series is translated into English for the first time and read by audiences in North America!
While it’s a light novel series with a decent number of volumes, it’s not exactly a well-known… and since there had been almost no overseas expansion up until now, I felt a sense of frustration at my own inadequacy.
However, I’ve been participating in events like Comic Market, where I’ve had the opportunity to interact with readers, and there are many overseas fans as well. Through these experiences, I’ve felt firsthand that there is demand for my work outside of Japan.
Therefore, this NOVELOUS is a long-awaited opportunity for me, and I’m both thrilled and relieved.
The characters in this series don’t fight for justice; they fight to protect what they love most. Even if it’s something others may not understand, they cherish it deeply and fight with all their might—I believe this is a theme that people around the world, regardless of nationality or language, can relate to and enjoy.
So, as an author, I am deeply moved to have this opportunity to share my work with many people.
Also, NOVELOUS is not currently available in Japan, but I hope it will be available on an app in the future.
It may be difficult to read all in English, but I would like to see how my series has been translated into English. I’m curious about things like how the names of the special moves have been translated, and how the unique Japanese dialogue has been rendered. As a writer, I find it very interesting.
My Twitter posts occasionally include lines inspired by my favorite foreign films. For example, in the second volume of the series, there’s a scene that pays homage to a certain moment in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Commando.” I’m curious to see if those parts are translated into the same English as the original movie, which is kind of fun (laughs).
Oh, I wonder how nuances like “(laugh)” are translated… There are so many things I’m curious about!
I’m sure this feeling is the same as what fans in the world have felt while waiting for the novels.
What was your experience like working with Shogakukan to bring Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! to readers outside Japan?
Mizusawa: I have no authority over how the novels will be developed, so everything is left up to Shogakukan.
That’s why I was very surprised when I first heard that it would be translated into English on the NOVELOUS app and enjoyed by readers in North America! I am truly grateful!
Are there any plans to translate some of your other works into English, such as the Four Cours After series and KimiToku! Even You Can Make a Tokusatsu Film manga?
Mizusawa: I have no authority over this matter as well, and it is not something that can be realized simply because I wish it to be so, so I cannot say anything about the schedule at this time. However, I firmly believe that if enough readers voice their desire for it, it will surely come to fruition.
In particular, “Four Cours After” and “Twin Gods Elvina” are part of the same universe as “Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!”. These are series that utilize the “multiverse” concept, which has become familiar through superhero movies, so I believe readers will enjoy them in the same way. Thank you for your continued support!
Additionally, I am currently working on novelizations of five anime, and recently, “GRIDMAN UNIVERSE” has been selected for an international film festival, gaining significant overseas popularity. Despite the various challenges involved, I sincerely hope that these novelizations will be translated and reach anime fans around the world.

“Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!” was animated up to about volume 4, but the original novel continues with even more exciting developments. Up to that point, only Tail Red has powered up, but as the story progresses, Tail Blue and Yellow also power up, new warriors appear, and unique Elemelians keep showing up. Isn’t that exciting?

自己紹介をお願いします。本サイト読者に向けて、ご自身の生い立ち、経歴についてお聞かせください。
読者の皆様、はじめまして。「俺、ツインテールになります。」の作者の水沢夢です。私の作品を楽しんでいただき、ありがとうございます！！
私は青森県という、日本の中でものどかな田舎にあたる地方で生まれ、今も住んでいます。そこからたまに東京に出かけて、作家としての打ち合わせをしたり各種イベントに参加する生活を送っています。
幼い頃はゲームの敵キャラを自分で考えたりするのが好きで、そのシリーズのコンテストに応募したりしました。（全て参加賞でしたが……）
学生の頃はずっと運動部で、あまり文系には縁が無かったのですが、やはりアニメやゲームは好きでした。
作家デビューしたのは社会人になった後の２０１２年、作品を新人賞に応募したのは２０１１年です。私の住んでいる地域を含めた、東日本で大きな地震が起きた年ですね。その出来事に触発されて、人生何が起きるかわからないので、やりたいことをやっておこうと思ったのがきっかけの一つです。
他にも、審査員の方が好きな漫画家さんだったり、いくつかの理由があってその年に応募し、無事に授賞することができました。
それからは楽しい作品を世に送り出すことを信条に、作家を続けています。
『俺、ツインテールになります。』の連載は10年にわたり、現在までに22巻が刊行されています。この間、執筆当初のアプローチに比べて変化したことがあれば教えてください。
私は昔から文章を書くことは得意とは言えませんでした。しかし絵はもっと苦手なので、自力で一つの作品を創る手段が小説しかなかったのです。そのため、作家になった当初はその技術も未熟でした。
ですので１巻当初から巻数を重ねるごとに、なるべくわかりやすく、伝わりやすい文章になるよう努力をしてきました。自分の文章力を磨くことが最大のアプローチで、物語についてはいい意味で変化無く、一貫してぶれずに描けていると思います。
一方、一番最初に書いたため、当然一番未熟な出来といえる俺ツイの１巻ですが、間違いなく人生で一番楽しく、一番情熱を注いで書いた一冊でした。自信を持って面白いと言えます。とにかく自分の大好きなものを作品にしようという思いがパワーになったのだと思います。
年を重ねても、技術が上がっても、その時の思いと情熱を決して忘れないよう、常に心がけて小説を書いています。
こう書くとあっさりしていますが、１０年以上……本当に長いですね。少し前、小学生の時に俺ツイを読んでいたという子に「社会人になった」と伝えられました。１０年とはそういう長さです……！
『俺、ツインテールになります。』を執筆にあたり、大変だったことはありましたか？
締切を守ることをいつも頑張ってきました！ 周りで何があっても、自分が体調を崩しても、絶対に本を完成させたい！ という情熱で突破してきました。
私の住む青森県は雪が多い地域なので、冬の執筆作業中には雪かきをしながら担当さんと電話で打ち合わせをした時もありました。
あと未だに作家の収入が不安定なので、もう少し何とかしたいです。生活と執筆のバランス取りが上手くいかず、大変だったことがありましたし今でも大変です。
これは古来から全ての芸術分野の仕事をしている人の多くがそうだったと思いますので、作家の宿命なのかもしれないですね。
本シリーズおよび「ツインテールを愛する総二」という発想は、どこから得たのでしょうか。
小説作品を書くにあたって色々アイディアを考えたのですが、最終的にツインテールと特撮ヒーロー作品という、自分の大好きなもの〝２つ〟を合わせて一つの作品にすることにしました。ツインテールがテーマなだけあって、２という数字の影響は作品の成り立ちから設定、登場人物の名前など、多岐にわたっています。
何らかの理由で身体が突然変異を起こしたり、鋼の装甲を身にまとったり、超能力を獲得したり――と、今までの自分とは違う「何かに変わる」ことが、世界中に数多あるヒーローの物語の始まりです。
この作品では、ツインテールという髪型が大好きな男の子がツインテールになることで強いヒーローが生まれる――そういう始まりにしようと考えました。
だから、変な作品ではあるのですが、意外と話作りの順序はシンプルだと思っています。
総二をなぜああいうキャラにしたかという理由もシンプルで、登場人物がもれなく変人ばかりの作品の中にあって、主人公が唯一の常識人――に見せかけて最大の変人にしよう、と考えたからです。一見真面目な方が、本当はヤバいやつだという真実が際立つと思ったので。
変なキャラだけど、好きなものへの向き合い方は誰よりも純粋で真摯で、だからこそこの世界では誰よりも強い。
総二は迷わずに創ることができました。
ちなみに先ほど２という数字が登場人物の名前にも関わっていると伝えましたが、この作品ではツインテールに関係する登場人物はもれなく世界中の言語の「２」をもじって名付けられています。主人公の総二は日本語の「二」。英語で２は「ＴＷＯ」ですが、それはメインヒロインの一人
トゥアール（ＴＷＯＥＡＲＬＥ）が名前に冠しています！
NOVELOUSアプリがリリースされる前、欧米のファンはアニメ化を通じて『俺、ツインテールになります。』のストーリーを体験する機会がありました。今回NOVELOUSでオリジナル ライトノベルシリーズが初めて英語に翻訳されることについて、感想をお聞かせください。
初めて英語に翻訳され、欧米の皆様に読んでもらうことができると知って、とても嬉しかったです！
ライトノベルとしてはなかなかの巻数続いているのですが、知名度が高い作品とはいえず……これまで海外展開がほとんどされていなかったため、自分の力不足を痛感して歯がゆい気持ちはありました。
しかし私はコミックマーケットというイベントに参加して読者の方達と交流しているのですが、そこには海外のファンの人もたくさん来てくださって、作品に国外の需要があるのは肌で感じていました。
そのため今回のこのＮＯＶＥＬＯＵＳは自分にとって満を持してという感じで、嬉しいと同時にほっとしています。
俺ツイのキャラクターたちは正義のために戦うのではなく、「自分だけの大好き」を守るために戦います。たとえそれが他者の理解を得にくいものであっても、自分が好きなものなら心から大切にし、そのために精一杯戦う――それは国や言語に関係なく世界中の人に共感してもらい、そして楽しんでもらえるテーマだと信じています。
だからこうしてまた一つ、多くの人たちに読んでもらえる機会ができたことに、作者として感激しています。
それと、今のところＮＯＶＥＬＯＵＳは日本では読むことができないのですが、今後アプリを使えるようにならないかな？ と思っています。
全ての英文を読むことは難しいですが、私は自分の作品がどんな風に英語で翻訳されているか、見てみたいんです。必殺技名はどうなっているか、とか、日本語特有のやりとりはどう訳されているのかな、とか。作家として興味があります。
俺ツイはたまに私が好きな洋画をオマージュした台詞があったりします。例えば原作２巻だと、アーノルド・シュワルツェネッガー氏 主演の「コマンドー」のとある場面をリスペ
クトしたやりとりとか。そういうところが逆に元の映画と同じ英語に訳されているかな、とか、ちょっと楽しみだったりします（笑）
あ、こういう「（笑）」みたいなニュアンスがどう訳されるんだろう……とか。気になることは多いです！
きっとこの気持ちは、欧米の皆様が今まで作品を待ち望んでくれたことと同じ思いなのでしょうね！
今回『俺、ツインテールになります。』を日本以外の読者に届けるために、小学館とどのように協業したのでしょうか。
作品をどのように展開していただくか、作者の私に何も権限はありませんので、全て小学館さまにお任せする形になっています。
だから最初、ＮＯＶＥＬＯＵＳというアプリで英語に翻訳されて欧米の皆様に楽しんでいただけると聞いたときはとても驚きました！ 本当に感謝しています！
他の作品、例えば『ふぉーくーるあふたー』シリーズやマンガの『キミ特！～キミにも特撮映画が撮れる!!～』を英語に翻訳する予定はありますか？
この件に関しても権限はなく、私が希望するだけでは実現できることではありませんので、予定はまだ何とも言えません。しかし、読者の皆様の求める声が集まればきっと実現すると信じています。
特に、「ふぉーくーるあふたー」や「双神のエルヴィナ」は「俺、ツインテールになります。」と同じ世界観――今はヒーロー映画などでもお馴染みのシステム『マルチバース』――の作品
群ですので、同じように楽しんでいただけると思います。よろしくお願いいたします！
また、私はアニメ作品のノベライズも今５冊書かせていただいていて、最近だとグリッドマンユニバースは国際映画祭に出品されるなど海外人気も高い作品です。
様々な難しさがあると思いますが、それらのノベライズも翻訳されて国外のアニメファンの皆様に届くようになればいいなと願っております。
