Nintendo has released an updated version of the Nintendo Account Agreement, stating that it will brick consoles if players tamper with their Switch. “Tampering” applies to those who mod their Switch, attempt to get around DRM, used “unauthorized copies” of games, and so on.
Players must agree to the new account agreement in order to continue using the eShop and play downloaded games. While Nintendo has not outright confirmed if it will brick Nintendo Switch 2 consoles if players violate the agreement, it likely announced the new changes to prepare for the launch of the upcoming console.
According to Game File, the agreement previously stated the following: “You are not allowed to lease, rent, sublicense, publish, copy, modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble all or any portion of the Nintendo Account Services without Nintendo’s written consent, or unless otherwise expressly permitted by applicable law.”
The new agreement now states that, if players play unauthorized games, tamper with their console, or hack Nintendo Account Services, “Nintendo may render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device permanently unusable in whole or in part.”
Recently, in Nintendo’s financials results explanatory material for fiscal year ending in March 2025, Nintendo forecasted Nintendo Switch 2 to sell 15 million units by the end of the current fiscal year ending in March 2026. If it reaches 15 million units, it will be close to or matching the original Nintendo Switch’s first year hardware sales in less time.
Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5 for $449.99. A bundle will be available for $499.99 featuring Mario Kart World. Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 at Best Buy, Walmart and Target went live on April 24 at 12:00 a.m. EDT. However, Nintendo and other retailers will periodically replenish stock leading into launch.
