Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa released a statement, confirming over 2.2 million people in Japan alone have submitted My Nintendo Store pre-order lottery applications for Nintendo Switch 2. My Nintendo Store counts as a single retailer, so this is an indicator that Nintendo Switch 2 is heading toward a historic launch in Japan and around the world.
Users in Japan could sign up for the My Nintendo Store pre-order lottery for Nintendo Switch 2 if they accumulated more than 50 hours of playtime on Switch before February 28, 2025, excluding demos and free-to-play titles. In addition, users must be subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online for at least a full year and still have an active subscription.
Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5 with a $449.99 MSRP, and a bundle will be available for $499.99 featuring Mario Kart World. Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 at Best Buy, Walmart and Target will also open on April 24 at 12:00 a.m. EDT.
Final Weapon staff writer Ryuji translated Furukawa’s statement from the official Nintendo X (formerly Twitter) account:
Statement from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa
Hello everyone, Furukawa here. On April 2nd, we announced the details of the Nintendo Switch 2 and launched a lottery on the My Nintendo Store, which resulted in a huge number of applicants – approximately 2.2 million in Japan alone. This is far more than we had previously anticipated, and the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that the My Nintendo Store will be able to deliver on the day of release has been exceeded by a large margin. Therefore, I’m sad to announce that a large number of customers may not be able to obtain the opportunity to pre-order the system, and for that, I apologize.
In the event you have not been selected for the first round of lottery applications, the My Nintendo Store should automatically move you into a second round, with results being released at a later date. However, even so, we sincerely apologize for not being able to meet your expectations despite our advance preparations. Currently, in response to this demand, efforts are being made to further strengthen the console production, as well as other measures.
As for product shipments, from tomorrow onwards, [Japanese] game retailers and online shops will sequentially begin accepting pre-orders or lottery sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 console (for further details, please check the information provided by each retailer). The My Nintendo Store will also continue to sell the console after the launch date (details will be provided at a later date). With the cooperation of our retailers, we will continue to ship the Nintendo Switch 2 and make every effort possible in order to deliver as many Nintendo Switch 2 units as possible to everyone.
