Nintendo’s Takuhiro Dohta confirmed that Nintendo Switch games running on Nintendo Switch 2 can have better performance, including faster load times and improved frame rates, without upgrade packs.
According to Dohta, the performance improvements that Nintendo Switch games may experience on Nintendo Switch 2 comes down to how the game was built. As a result, results may vary from title to title.
Dohta told GameSpot the following, “First I’ll start with what happens when you play a game without applying the update, which is that, and this will depend heavily on how the original game was created and also how it was designed. But I think you can expect certain improvements such as faster load times, maybe improved frame rate. But again, it’ll depend on how that game was built.”
In a separate interview with Nintendo Life, Nintendo of America’s Nate Bihldorff added further clarification on how Nintendo Switch games can receive upgrades and performance boosts on Nintendo Switch 2. According to Bihldorff, there could be passive free upgrades to existing Nintendo Switch games from third-parties, allowing their games to run better on Switch 2. Developers and publishers may also choose to put more effort into those updates or develop new content and charge an upgrade fee.
Bihldorff said, “And I do think you’ll see probably a variety of experiences on the Nintendo Switch 2, depending on which game you’re playing. There are probably going to be some passive upgrades that are simply a patch that is free and gives you a better experience, whether it’s loading times or performance. You may see something where the developers put more effort into it and that will be reflected in a commensurate price.”
Lastly, Nintendo Switch 2 launches June 5, and a Mario Kart World bundle will be also available at launch.
