In a statement sent to the Financial Times, LEGO revealed that they are building a new in-house development studio for video games. Previously, it has worked with numerous outside companies on video game development.

LEGO CEO Niels Christiansen states “We can definitely say as long as we’re under the Lego brand we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical. [Game development in-house] is something we’re building up.”

In the past, LEGO has worked with Traveler’s Tales, 2K, and Guerilla to make games such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones, LEGO 2K Drive, and LEGO Horizon Adventures.

Recently, LEGO has officially revealed a set based on the Mario Kart franchise. The set will release on May 15 for $170 via the LEGO Store and July 1 at retail.

It features 1,972 pieces and its recommended for ages 18 and up. Pre-orders for the new LEGO Mario Kart set are available now via the official LEGO site

In the past, LEGO has worked with Nintendo on a LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as sets based on Animal Crossing, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and more. LEGO has also worked with other gaming companies on sets and games. In the coming months, they will release sets based on the Game Boy and One Piece anime.

Lastly, the most recent LEGO game, LEGO Horizon Adventures, is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC.
