New Resident Evil Film Premieres in Theaters on September 18, 2026

Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced that a new Resident Evil film will release in theaters on September 18, 2026. Zach Cregger, who previously worked on beloved horror film Barbarian, will direct the new Resident Evil movie.

Reportedly the new movie will hearken back to the series’ horror roots. This will mark the eighth Resident Evil film to date. Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first six, which starred Milla Jovovich. The most recent film, titled Welcome to Raccoon City, rebooted the series. The 2026 film will once again serve as a reboot.

Last year, during the Capcom NEXT Summer 2024 showcase, Capcom’s Koshi Nakanishi confirmed that he’s the director for a new Resident Evil game. Besides the new game, Nakanishi’s Resident Evil track record includes design and directory duties for Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard.

“We’re making a new Resident Evil,” said Nakanishi during the Capcom NEXT showcase. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7 biohazard]. But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

In February 2025, ESRB officially rated Resident Evil 5 for Xbox Series X|S. It is currently unknown if the rating indicates that a remake of Resident Evil 5 is in development or if it will simply be another remaster. It’s also worth noting that the new ESRB rating is the exact same as the original Resident Evil 5

Lastly, the new Resident Evil film will release in theaters on September 18, 2026. The original three Resident Evil games are available to purchase via GOG. Remakes of the three are available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
