Sony announced that the company will end production of recordable Blu-ray disc media in February 2025. This will include recordable mini-discs, MD data discs, and mini DV cassettes.
Currently, Sony has not yet announced a successor to the media format. This will not affect the release of video games at the moment, however. Instead, it will primarily affect the physical release of movies, TV shows, anime, and more.
The company initially started releasing Blu-ray media in the early 2000s. For a while, Sony were in competition with Toshiba’s HD-DVD format. After a while, though, Toshiba discontinued HD-DVDs in 2008. Sony has used their Blu-ray technology with the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
Numerous companies utilize Blu-ray media in a variety of different ways. Recently, Discotek announced that they will launch several beloved anime series, films, and other properties on the format.
