According to Eurogamer, the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise is officially over for the foreseeable future. The reason is due to the Olympics wanting to explore NFTs and eSports instead.

The Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise initially began in 2007 to coincide with Beijing Olympics in 2008. The series would release new entries every two years to coincide with both the Winter Olympics and Summer Olympics. They’ve released over the years on the Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS. The most recent entry released in 2020, commemorating the Tokyo Olympics that same year.

According to a recent article from Eurogamer, the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is officially over. Speculation had begun about the status of the franchise due to the fact that, for the first time in over fifteen years, there has been no Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series released this year, despite the currently ongoing Paris Olympics. Based on insight from a veteran behind the series, the series has ended due to the Olympics wanting to explore NFTs and eSports instead.

The most recent Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games entry, titled Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, is described as follows:

Team up with Mario, Sonic, and friends on Nintendo Switch in action-packed sporting events! Bring your best moves to the track, the gym, the ring, or the water in dozens of different party games everyone will enjoy.

Skateboard, surf, and race your way to the top! With more than 30 events to master in this fun-filled Olympic Games contest, there are plenty of ways to prove your skills to your friends in multiplayer mode.

The team’s all here! Play as Mario, Sonic, or choose from a star-studded cast of colorful characters from your favorite games.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the last entry in the series for now, is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
