During the Mar10 Day 2024 showcase, Nintendo announced that a new animated Super Mario Bros movie is planned to release on April 3, 2026. The movie will be released in the US and other major markets first.
The Super Mario Bros Movie was a major success for Nintendo and Illumination, with millions of fans having watched the film in theaters. Well over $1 billion in ticket sales were generated, and the movie also made its debut on Netflix this past December. Thanks to this success, production of a new movie was greenlit by Nintendo.
New Super Mario Bros Movie by Illumination
Nintendo and Illumination are teaming up once more for the upcoming Super Mario Bros movie. It will release on April 3, 2026 in US theaters and other markets. It’s implied to be a sequel, as Shigeru Miyamoto states that the movie will broaden Mario’s world further.
Here’s what Miyamoto had to say, via Nintendo’s Twitter account:
“This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories.”
Miyamoto continued, “We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”
On March 12, Nintendo Switch Online wilk receive Dr. Mario (Game Boy), Mario Golf (Game Boy Color), and Mario Tennis (Game Boy Color).
Lastly, release dates for Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door were also announced. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release first on May 23 for Nintendo Switch. Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD releases just one month later on June 23.
