What’s the Purpose of the Phone Booths?

Since you can only fast-travel to locations within your current region, calling up Cid is your best bet for easily returning to areas you have previously been to. Good luck trying to fast travel to the Grasslands if you’re in Gongaga! You could hoof it all the way back to some other region and try to get a ferry, but why bother when Cid will fly you to any region you want?

How to Unlock Cid’s Plane Rides

Cid is one of the main characters of Final Fantasy VII, and until he’s playable in part 3, he’ll provide you with a flight service. Unlike the Chocobo Carriages, where you have to do a quest, Cid shows up during the story and offers his service. Simply enjoying and playing the game until Chapter 10 will automatically get you this additional form of travel. It will cost you 300 gil a pop for a ride, but that’s small beans. However, keep an eye out for airstrips and phone booths. Cid can’t just land and pick you up anywhere…
