Who is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s Creative Director?
Tetsuya Nomura is a famed character designer and director these days, but he started as a young man with a dream of being a manga artist. He ended up applying to Square because of his love for art and games (including Dragon Quest). Nomura began as an uncredited debugger on Final Fantasy IV. Later he became a monster designer for Final Fantasy V. After his contributions to Final Fantasy VI, he was ready to hit the big time…
The Visionary, the Designer, THE Tetsuya Nomura
Tetsuya Nomura is one of the biggest names at Square Enix, let alone the games industry in its entirety. If you know somebody besides the father of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, it’s gonna Nomura or Yoshi-P. He’s just that guy. Nomura has been a major contributor to Final Fantasy‘s story, systems, and characters dating back to Final Fantasy VI. He’s also the director of the Kingdom Hearts series! Nomura has a history of providing lots of input that ends up in many games, even games outside of FF and KH, such as The World Ends With You.
Nomura is known for his character designs, but he also provides tons of ideas that wind up being used. His gameplay and story contributions have ended up being some of the most memorable parts of several games. His input led to the DMW system and the ending of Crisis Core, for example. He even steered the story of the original Final Fantasy VII in different directions than Yoshinori Kitase had initially planned for that game. Final Fantasy VII was truly his big break as a creator.
What is His Role in the Creation of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
For Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nomura was one of the Directors. FF7R included many Nomura hallmarks and his trademark character designs. For Rebirth, he stepped back to a slightly smaller role, that of a Creative Director. His ideas are allowed to flow freely and help create a better game alongside the rest of the directors and staff. This also gives him some flexibility, as he’s not bound to CBU1 like the rest of Rebirth’s devs. Nomura needs time to help with other projects! Including the upcoming third entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake project and other projects such as new titles for the Kingdom Hearts series.
