    Haikyu!! Final Film Earns Biggest Opening in Japan in 2024 So Far

    It has officially beaten Gundam SEED Freedom.

    Recent Japan box office figures have confirmed that the first part of the Haikyu!! Final film has become the biggest 2024 opening in the country so far. It has already beaten Gundam SEED Freedom after just a few days.

    Haruichi Furudate launched the Haikyu!! manga in 2011. Both Viz Media and MANGA Plus have released the manga around the world. The anime adaptation initially aired in 2014 and lasted until 2020. Earlier this month, Shueisha released a new one-shot manga for the series. The movie is now available to watch in Japanese theaters.

    A recent box office report from Japan has revealed that the first part of the Haikyu!! Final film has become the #1 movie in the country. It has already passed Gundam SEED Freedom, the previous #1 holder, after just one week. Gundam has since fallen to the #2 spot, earning 318,026,540 yen (about US$2.12 million) in its second weekend. Both statistics will likely grow (and fall, in Gundam’s case), in the coming weeks.

    Based off of the original Weekly Shonen Jump manga series from Haruichi Furudate, Haikyu!! is a slice-of-life sports anime revolving around Shoyo Hinata’s love of volleyball. Inspired by a small-statured pro volleyball player, Hinata creates a volleyball team in his last year of middle school.

    Unfortunately the team is matched up against the “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama’s team in their first tournament and inevitably lose. After the crushing defeat, Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama After entering high school, Hinata joins the volleyball team only to find that Tobio has also joined.

    At the time of writing, the franchise’s staff has not yet confirmed when Part 2 of the movie will be released, or when Part 1 will release in the West. The Haikyu! Final and Gundam SEED Freedom film are now available in Japanese theaters. The original Haikyu!! manga is available on both MANGA Plus and Viz Media.
