Jason Demarco of Adult Swim has confirmed that after FLCL Grunge and FLCL Shoegaze, the company will not be making any more entries in the series. Both series premiered in September 2023 on Adult Swim.
The first entry in the FLCL franchise initially premiered as a six-episode OVA from 2000 to 2001. In 2016, two new FLCL seasons premiered on Adult Swim. The series is a love letter to musical genres all over the world, from progressive to alternative to the recently released Shoegaze and Grunge. However, based on the recent statement from Adult Swim, the series will end with Shoegaze and Grunge.
FLCL Is Coming to An End at Adult Swim
Jason DeMarco, the senior vice president of anime and action series at Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network, recently posted the following on Twitter:
“For those who are wondering, Adult Swim considers FLCL Grunge and Shoegaze ratings successes and is very happy with their performance. We won’t be making any more, but thank you to everyone who helped make them a success, you taking the time to watch means a lot.”
When asked if there was any particular reason, he said that they “have other projects [they’d] like to do and a limited amount of money to make them with. Production I.G could still make more of course at some point, but it won’t be with [them].”
The statement indicates that despite Grunge and Shoegaze‘s success, other projects are currently in development that take higher priority. The FLCL franchise coming to an end could come from Warner Bros. Animation’s downsizing last year. At the moment, little official details are known about the situation.
Shoegaze will air every Sunday exclusively on Adult Swim during their Toonami block. Grunge, on the other hand, is available in its entirety on Max. Fans can watch other entries in the series on various streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Funimation. Lastly, FLCL Shoegaze and Grunge are available in their entirety on Max. The next episode of Shoegaze will be available on Adult Swim through Toonami and Max tomorrow at 12:00 AM.
