After six years, the Nintendo Switch‘s sales have finally surpassed the Nintendo Wii, specifically in the United States. As a result, the Nintendo Switch is now one of the most successful consoles of all time in the US, trailing just behind the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2.
Nintendo initially released the Switch in March 2017, with the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being a day-one title. Over the years, developers have created hundreds of successful and beloved games for the Switch, such as Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, and, just recently, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is highly likely that it will become the most successful console of all time before the end of the console’s lifetime.
The Nintendo Switch Beats the Nintendo Wii
The news comes from an article from GamesIndustry.biz, courtesy of Circana, a business consumer analyst. GamesIndustry.biz states that the Switch continued to perform strongly in 2023 thanks to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The US lifetime sales of Switch hardware finally surpassed Wii lifetime sales in the US market during July 2023. Switch lifetime sales are behind the Xbox 360 by less than one million units and the PlayStation 2 by fewer than five million.
The news comes just a few weeks after rumors circulated of a new Nintendo console releasing in the second half of 2024. At the time of writing, Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors. Only time will tell what Nintendo has planned for the future.
Lastly, the Nintendo Switch is available in three packages. First, there’s the base edition, available for approximately $300. Then there’s the portable exclusive Nintendo Switch Lite, available for $199.99. Lastly, the Nintendo Switch OLED, which includes several visual and hardware updates, costs $349.99. Stay tuned to Nintendo for more news on their plans for their future lineup.
