With the massive success of the recent Mario movie, The Last of Us TV show on Max, and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, video game adaptations are more successful than ever. Over the next few years, several more TV shows and movies based on video games will be released. But with so many projects in development, it is hard to track them all. Here’s an overview of seven upcoming movies based on video games releasing in 2023, 2024, and beyond.
Gran Turismo
On the surface, a Gran Turismo movie seems random. How do you build a movie out of a racing game? However, director Neill Blomkamp has found a way to make it work. Based on a true story, the Gran Turismo movie tells the story of a young teenage gamer whose skills in Gran Turismo helped him become a professional racecar driver.
The movie’s cast includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Archie Madekwe. The Gran Turismo movie looks to be an exciting insight into how gaming can lead to greater aspirations beyond the medium. Check out the trailer here before its release on August 11, 2023!
Five Nights at Freddy’s
The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has been in development for almost a decade. Developed under horror production company Blumhouse for a few years, little to no information about the upcoming film was revealed. However, the film’s official trailer was recently announced, and a release date was confirmed.
Five Nights at Freddy’s will be released on October 27, 2023. Based on the beloved indie horror franchise of the same name, the new game looks to capture the complex and elusive story from the first game. Fans of the series should give the upcoming film a watch. Check out the trailer here!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to be yet another entry in Sonic’s now-popular movie franchise. The movie franchise began in 2020 during the height of COVID-19, and over the years, its success has led to sequels and spin-off projects being announced and in development.
Currently, not a lot is known about the upcoming movie. The forthcoming film will include the fan-favorite character Shadow and will release on December 20, 2024. Fans can expect to hear more information about the upcoming movie closer to release.
Mortal Kombat 2
With the release of Mortal Kombat 1 imminent, the sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film is now in development. Mortal Kombat II will introduce several beloved characters from the series.
Examples include Johnny Cage, Kitana, Shao Khan, Quan Chi, and Jade. Currently, a release date is unknown. But the film is being filmed, so fans can expect to hear more news about the movie very soon.
Minecraft
After almost a decade of development, the Minecraft movie will release in the Spring of 2025. All we know about the film is that it will feature live-action segments and star Jason Mamoa in a leading role.
More information will undoubtedly be revealed about the upcoming movie closer to its release. But after the massive success of the Mario movie, I do not doubt that the Minecraft film will be just as successful, if not more so.
Metal Gear Solid
The last notable video game movie in development is Metal Gear Solid. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake, the film has been developing since 2015. However, the film’s creative team has struggled to create a script for the film. However, with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 releasing soon and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater in development, we’ll hopefully hear more about the Metal Gear Solid movie soon.
