In a recent shareholder meeting, Capcom revealed that they are evaluating their approach to the Mega Man franchise. The reveal comes just a few months after the release of the Mega Man Battle Network franchise on modern consoles.
It has been almost five years since the last mainline Mega Man game has released. Since then, Capcom has released several ports and remastered versions of the many franchises that feature the blue bomber. Capcom has not yet confirmed the development of a new Mega Man game.
The Future of the Mega Man Franchise
In a recent shareholder’s meeting, Capcom was asked two questions about the Mega Man franchise. First, they were asked, “What are your plans for the Mega Man series?”
Capcom responded, “Including Mega Man 11, the latest entry in the franchise, Mega Man is one of Capcom’s historic IPs and is loved by fans, and as such we want to take care in how we develop the series.” Capcom is also “considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series, which requires numerous factors, including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc.”
Next, they were asked about their plans for “new ports or collections in the Mega Man series.” Capcom responded that they are “considering [their] approach to ports of past entries titles, which includes addressing technical issues.”
What Do These Answers Mean?
These answers, while vague, still provide some insight into what to expect from the future of Mega Man. Capcom “considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series” may mean they are actively planning to make a new Mega Man game. Whether it is a new mainline Mega Man game, a new entry in the X series, or something else remains to be seen.
Moreover, Capcom’s answer confirms that they are still working on developing more Legacy ports. So far, they have released collections including the mainline and X series. Recently, they’ve also released bundles for the Zero series and the Battle Network series. The Legends series is the only Mega Man franchise that hasn’t been ported to modern hardware.
Ultimately, time will only tell what Capcom has planned for the Mega Man franchise. With Capcom’s recent successes with Street Fighter and Monster Hunter, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before we get a brand new Mega Man game. Lastly, fans of the series should stay tuned for more news about Capcom’s plans for the Mega Man franchise.
