Next Nintendo Console Will Use Same Nintendo Accounts From Switch

A "smooth transition" is a priority.

    Published:

Nintendo recently published a Q&A transcript from its recent shareholders meeting, revealing new information about Nintendo Accounts and the next Nintendo console. According to company president Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo Accounts from Nintendo Switch will be used on the next Nintendo console to facilitate a “smooth transition.”

Nintendo Switch has entered its seventh year in the video game market, and over 290 million Nintendo Accounts have been created across mobile and console. Furukawa believes that keeping the same Nintendo Accounts system from Switch will allow players to smoothly transition to the next console whenever it arrives. Nintendo’s next-generation console will likely be a more common topic of discussion within the next year or two. Furukawa did not elaborate further on the company’s next console, but the returning Nintendo Account system is a promising sign at the very least.

In the United States, Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of May 2023, beating the PlayStation 5 in both unit and dollar sales. Nintendo Switch console and game spending also reached one of its highest points in the past three years due to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Additionally, Nintendo claimed the top spot for units sales in accessories with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Series 1 Amiibo Character Pack.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom instantly became the second best-selling game of 2023 in the U.S., continuing the Switch’s momentum into its seventh year. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom managed to reach this status with only physical copies being accounted for. Moreover, the highly anticipated sequel was the best-selling game of May 2023. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also reappeared in the top 20 best-selling games list for May 2023.

Lastly, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
