    Final Fantasy is one of gaming’s oldest and most beloved franchises. The first game was released in 1987 on the Famicom. And even after forty years, the franchise has shown no sign of stopping. With Final Fantasy XVI on the horizon, many newcomers to the series may be wondering how many Final Fantasy games there are. Despite the most recent title, Final Fantasy XVI, far more than sixteen games are currently available in the series. Here’s an overview of just how many Final Fantasy games have been released over the past thirty-six years.

    Spin-Offs

    Compared to the mainline series, there are dozens of spin-off games under the Final Fantasy banner. However, fans may want to consider a few notable Final Fantasy spin-off franchises. The Final Fantasy Tactics games play similarly to other tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem, and Crystal Chronicles games function like action RPGs. Recently, Final Fantasy Origin: Stranger of Paradise was released as a spin-off on most modern consoles. Additionally, a few fighting games and rhythm games exist, including Dissidia and Theatrhythm.

    This is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. There are many expansions to games like Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XIV, as well as bundled releases that include several games at once. However, special attention should also go to the compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII is arguably one of the most beloved games in the franchise, and it’s gotten the most spin-offs out of every Final Fantasy game to date. There have been eight so far:

    How Many Final Fantasy Games Are There in Total?

    According to thefinalfantasy.net, 126 Final Fantasy games have been released as of today. These include mainline games, spin-offs, remasters, remakes, and mobile games. So while there are technically sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games, there are actually more than 100 games in the franchise. Thankfully, they are all available on most modern consoles, so if you ever want to give the franchise a try, there are plenty of options out there. Final Fantasy XVI will release on June 22, 2023, for PlayStation 5.
