Many fans were perplexed at Naughty Dog’s absence from the recent PlayStation Showcase. Last year, the studio announced they would be working on a standalone game for The Last of Us Part 2‘s multiplayer. The multiplayer game, referred to as Factions, was said to receive more information later this year. Thus, the title seemed prepped for an appearance at the PlayStation Showcase 2023. However, we now know why Naughty Dog’s next game was mysteriously absent from the showcase.
The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Needs More Time in the Oven
Naughty Dog released a new statement on Twitter. today, confirming a delay for The Last of Us multiplayer game. The statement begins by saying: “We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game. We’re incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we’ve realized what is best for the game is to give it more time.”
An article from Bloomberg has clarified the situation. The company is currently reevaluating the game’s direction. The game’s team has been subsequently scaled back and many of its developers have been moved to other projects. At the moment the game hasn’t been canceled, but the future of Naughty Dog’s multiplayer project is currently unknown.
The post also mentions “other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience…” Time will only tell when we will get more information on Naughty Dog’s next single-player and multiplayer experiences.
