Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – How to Shield Surf

A guide to surfing the hills and mountainous plains of Hyrule.

If you’re currently playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you might be wondering what tricks from Breath of the Wild, its critically acclaimed prequel, have carried over. Shield surfing was a neat trick you were able to do across different hills and mountains in BOTW, and luckily Nintendo has brought back the ability to shield surf in Tears of the Kingdom

With TOTK, there are plenty of new ways you can utilize this feature. Whether its skating across minecart rails or surfing off a sky island, shield surfing is back and better than ever! Here’s everything you need to know about shield surfing in Tears of the Kingdom

To shield surf, you will need to press the following buttons at the same time: ZR, X, & A. ZR is used to ready the shield, X is used to make Link jump, and A allows you to throw the shield underneath your feet to ride.

It’s important to note that if you are not on a sloped surface (hill, mountain, etc) the shield will automatically go back to being on your back. You can only surf if the conditions are right, which really just means you need to have a slope to slide down.

Something you should keep in mind is that the durability of your shield will rapidly decrease as you surf on top of it. If you’re looking to have a good time and surf down large stretches of terrain, it might be best to save your best shields for battles against the fierce foes surrounding Hyrule.

It’s really just that easy! Following the button prompts above, you can quickly become an expert shield surf player in Tears of the Kingdom!

One of the easiest ways to succeed at shield surfing is by using the brand-new Fuse ability. This allows you to combine any material in the world with your shield, which can give it new properties.

Players across the world have combined the minecart with the shield to create a very unique shield surfing experience. If you’re looking to try out new forms of transportation, channel your inner Tony Hawk and throw together your favorite shield and a minecart!
