Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo Available Now

Capcom has revealed when players can get their first taste of the remake's revised gameplay.

RE fans rejoice! At Capcom’s showcase today, officially known as a “Capcom Spotlight’, the Resident Evil 4 “Chainsaw” demo release date was announced. And surprise, it’s available tonight on March 9! Capcom has a penchant for revealing same-day demos; they’ve done this before at the end of the incredible E3 2016 reveal trailer for Resident Evil 7: biohazard. Players can go hands-on with the reimagined horror classic tonight via the PS Store, Xbox Marketplace, or Steam. The demo is set at the beginning of the game and puts players in the shoes – and gorgeous, expensive jacket – of special agent Leon S. Kennedy, searching for the president’s daughter. Unlike recent Resident Evil demos, this demo has no time limit and can be replayed an infinite number of times.

What can the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw demo tell us?

As evident in trailers, combat in the Resident Evil 4 remake looks familiar but fresh. The Third Trailer showcased the return of Leon’s roundhouse kick and suplex, but an earlier trailer revealed a new ability: a brand new knife parry that can push back melee attackers. Ludicrously, it can even block Dr. Salvador’s chainsaw. However, knives are a finite resource in the remake; the demo ought to show us if this mechanic is broken (i.e., overpowered) or not.

The enemy onslaught Capcom’s throwing at players seems more intense than ever. This should keep the challenge high after the original game’s tank controls have been removed. With the demo set in a segment packed with combat, we’ll find out if that’s the case tonight. Gamers familiar with the original release (and who isn’t?) can use the demo to reacclimate to the modernized combat of the RE4 remake. And with some consternation regarding the remake’s graphics in some areas, players can finally take a look at the title’s visual presentation running natively on their console or PC.
