Vanillaware president George Kamitani confirmed that the studio’s new fantasy game has reached the end of development. The upcoming game will be published by ATLUS as one of Vanillaware’s biggest games yet.
The 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Prologue game trial launched in March 2019 featuring an “Extras” section. This Extras section included a teaser trailer for Vanillaware’s new fantasy title, which had just begun development at the time. Nearly four years later, the game is wrapping up development, and Kamitani looks to the future of Vanillaware.
In an interview at Nintenderos, Kamitani confirms that development of the new Vanillaware fantasy game is complete. Additionally, Kamitani is working on a game that won’t be finished for several years. Kamitani did not work on the new fantasy game but hopes fans support it all the same.
Here’s what Kamitani had to say:
“In March 2019, for reasons I won’t get into, we released only the prologue of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, but it did include a video of our next title in it,” Kamitani said. “And now, it’s finally finished. While I’m not the director of that title, it’s one of Vanillaware’s biggest productions, so please look forward to it.
Lastly, the title I’m working on right now won’t be finished for several years, but once that big title I’m telling you about is finished, I should get some development staff, so development of my project will finally move into full swing.”
Previously, Kamitani expressed his desire to bring the cult-classic Muramasa: The Demon Blade to modern platforms. Undisclosed issues prevent this port from happening at the moment, however. Muramasa: The Demon Blade remains on Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Vita for the foreseeable future.
GrimGrimoire: OnceMore, Vanillaware’s next release, launches April 4, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in North America. Lastly, the European release follows up on April 7, 2023.
