NVIDIA ‘unlaunches’ RTX 4080 12 GB model following massive criticism

RTX 4080 16 GB proceeds with launch.

In a historic move, NVIDIA is retracting its RTX 4080 12 GB models from launching on November 16. According to Nvidia, these two GPUs caused confusion for customers due to its designation. Nvidia hopes the reception and enthusiasm around the RTX 4080 will be favorable like the RTX 4090.

Popular PC media outlets and content creators believe NVIDIA overcharged for the 12 GB model ahead of inevitable RTX 4070 launch. Additionally, the performance difference between the 12 GB and 16 GB models was alarming during the initial reveal. Backlash and widespread criticism from consumers persisted going into the RTX 4090 review and launch cycle.

“The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right,” NVIDIA said. “Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing. So, we’re pressing the ‘unlaunch’ button on the 4080 12GB. The RTX 4080 16GB is amazing and on track to delight gamers everywhere on November 16th. If the lines around the block and enthusiasm for the 4090 is any indication, the reception for the 4080 will be awesome.”

The 16 GB model launches November 16 for $1199. More GPUs in the RTX 40 series product line will be revealed at a later date.
