Atlus is planning to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Persona in a big way soon! Today, the series celebrates its anniversary with the original release of Persona 1 back on September 20th, 1996 in Japan. The first game is titled Megami Ibunroku Persona as a spin-off title from the Shin Megami Tensei series. The western release saw its name localized to Revelations: Persona when it releases on December 14th, 1996. Persona 1 takes place in the town of Mikage-cho in Japan as students of St. Hermelin take part in the “Persona fortune-telling” game. Upon doing so, the students call on the power of Persona granted by Philemon and the town ends up getting attacked by demons. Lead by the silent protagonist Naoya, the story of Persona unfolds into two routes that determine the fate of Mikage-cho.

Persona 1 also saw a remastered re-release on PSP in 2009 which brought in new players to the world of Persona. At the time, the widely successful Persona 4 was out for little over a year on the PS2. Persona 1 would also resurface on the PlayStation Classic in December 2018. Since then, the series would become a staple JRPG franchise in the west and Japan respectively. With the 25th Anniversary announcements of Persona to come, we hope Atlus revisits the early entries of the series to introduce new players to the roots.
In the meantime, stay tuned at Final Weapon for the latest Japanese gaming news and updates!
