A possible re-release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 is being looked into by Digital Eclipse thanks to the recent outpouring of the #FREEMVC2 movement

Over the past week, many fighting game fans have rallied together under the FREEMVC2 campaign by Maximilian Dood. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is one of the most influential fighting games of all time ever since that original arcade and Dreamcast release. For nearly 8 years, Marvel vs Capcom 2 has not been purchasable on digital storefronts (PS3, Xbox 360) due to licensing expirations. Many have been clamoring for another re-release of the game since then and unfortunately, those demands were never even acknowledged.

This past week, Digital Eclipse developers such as Mike Mika and Stephen Frost have taken to Twitter to thank fans for the outpouring of support for the game. Digital Eclipse, formerly known as Backbone, originally developed the digital release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 with 16×9 support and other features all those years ago. Additionally, Digital Eclipse has worked on various projects with Capcom and Disney such as the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection & Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King. More developers at the studio share the same sentiment that Mika has about MvC2. This is what Mike Mika had to say:

“We made what I think was the last MVC2 release on console when we were known as Backbone. (16×9, etc) I love the outpouring- We’d swap in GGPO and do documentary and museum work, etc. Will need to talk to Disney and Capcom to make it real. We’re game if they are. #FREEMVC2

Developer support from Digital Eclipse who are willing and ready to make this happen gives us hope that Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be released again someday. Since the developers are looking into it already, we hope that Disney and Capcom get the message too. For those interested in seeing this amazing fighting game come back for modern platforms, we encourage you all to advocate with the hashtag as well. Marvel and Capcom have one of the greatest legacies in the entire industry thanks to their fighting games and we hope many can experience it again.
