The use of payment options for the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo eShops will be discontinued starting January 18th, 2022

Nintendo announced today that the use of payment options for the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo eShops will be discontinued starting January 18th, 2022. This includes the use of credit cards. Players who linked their Nintendo Network ID to their Nintendo Account may continue to purchase software from the official Nintendo website with their usual payment methods like credit cards and PayPal. Nintendo Accounts are the ones primarily used on mobile and Switch. In addition, players may still be able to use Nintendo eShop cards to add funds to their balance.

The internet browser on 3DS platforms will also be affected. The filter function will be removed starting on January 18th. However, players who have enabled or disabled the function at least one time may still use it. Automatic payment renewals for tickets in Karaoke JOYSOUND for Wii U will be discounted on October 26th this year. Based on all this information, Nintendo is beginning to wind down payment related features on 3DS and Wii U. Lastly, the list of details provided by Nintendo are available here.
