The PS Vita is home to many indie and Japanese games with releases continuing into 2021. However, it seems like new releases will stop following July 20th. According to PS Vita indie developer Spooky Squid Games, July 20th will be the final day the PS Vita’s PSN Store gets updated. This means that digital releases on the platform will cease by that cutoff date. Developer Miguel Sternberg from Spooky Squid Games is helping to port over arcade-style game Russian Subway Dogs to the Vita with the cutoff date looming over the release. Here’s what he had to say via Kotaku AU:
“That date is the final day the Vita store will get updated. No new games after that! This [Russian Subway Dogs] is really a passion project rather than a sound business decision.”
The last few PS Vita games should release this month and the PSN Store will still be active for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, there’s no telling how long it will remain active considering Sony is already looking to cut off indie developers from the platform. Sony’s main focus are cross-gen games between PS4 and PS5 while developing new next-gen titles to push console sales.
